John Grisham: The Chamber

Review by Kirsten Böhm

book title The book "The Chamber" by John Grisham tells the story of a young lawyer who tries to save a Death Row inmate.

Adam Hall is a young lawyer at a top Chicago law firm. He volunteers for a nearly forgotten pro bono case ("pro bono" = defending poor clients without being paid). The client is a member of the Ku-Klux-Klan who has killed two children in a bombing. He is on Death Row waiting for his execution for ten years.
For the law firm, that client is annoying and they are happy when their pro bono lawyer is fired by the client. But when Hall starts working on this case the situation changes. The impertinent and ungrateful client is suddenly grateful for Hall's help and Hall is able to dispel the doubts of the other lawyers.

Nevertheless the case is closed and a date for the execution is announced. Hall tries everything to rescue his client and has to rely on his family for support, because the case is not just a law case but also an unpleasant family matter.

My opinion:

John Grisham has written a real masterpiece. It's one of his best and most interesting books I have read. He describes the situations very accurate and easy to imagine, so you can easily identify with the characters. Nonetheless it's very thrilling and not superficial, a real bestseller.
